JOHANNES EBENBAUER studied church music (organ, conducting, singing, composition) at the Graz University of Music and Organ Performance and at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts.
From 1985 music assistant at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna (under the director of music Peter Planyavsky), from 1991 to 2005 director of cathedral music at St. Stephen’s. Responsibilities and activities there: artistic and organizational mentoring of all ensembles at the cathedral in liturgy and concerts (including the vocal ensemble, the cathedral choir, soloist ensembles, the cathedral orchestra, Baroque Orchestra; cooperations with ORF broadcasting and television, which include live broadcasts on Radio Klassik Stephansdom every Sunday from 1998. Since 2002 he teaching at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, 2013 he was appointed with professorship for organ and improvisation, in 2020 he was commissioned to become the head of the Institute of Organ, Organ Research and Church Music. Since 2010 is organist at the Franciscan Church in Vienna, also he is performing as an artist and taking artistic responsibility of the Wöckherl Organ. J. Ebenbauerʼs activities include organ concerts, masterclasses, performances of his own compositions and publications of CD records complete his artistic activities. In the 2022–2023 season he has started to conduct regularly at the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle.
